CARE packages that the family of the late Dana Seetahal, SC, donated to the Judiciary have been sent to the Living Water Community.

On Monday, Seetahal’s family and friends, in a “random act of kindness,” gave out packages to staff at the Port of Spain Magistrates Court.

They were paying tribute to her memory on the sixth anniversary of her death. They chose to give out hampers and care packages to the court’s staff and students at the University of the West Indies who may be experiencing hardship caused by the covid19 pandemic.

Seetahal’s sister Susan Francois said they chose to commemorate Seetahal’s generosity, an outstanding aspect of her character.

In a release on Wednesday, the Judiciary thanked Seetahal’s family for their gesture of kindness.

But it said while it appreciated the sentiment that motivated the family’s donation, it was not in a position to accept the hampers and care packages since it was against its policy to accept gifts.

The Judiciary’s policies do not permit the receipt of gifts from stakeholders or members of the public and it has therefore arranged for the items to be forwarded to the Living Water Community, which has been on a drive to provide assistance to people in need as a result of the covid19 pandemic,” the release said.

Francois told Newsday she was happy that if the Judiciary could not use their gifts, they sent them to help people who are really in need.

“It shows that one act can generate other acts of kindness. And this is what we hoped to achieve.”

She said UWI students who also received care packages also did the same, by sharing with other students in need.

“They looked out for others. They found others who were in greater need and gave what they had.”

She said the message behind Monday’s gesture in remembrance of Seetahal was that “we are in this together.”
