Man arrested at WASA charged with assault

The 54-year-old Santa Cruz man who was held at WASA’s San Juan office in relation to a suspected murder plot appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate on Tuesday.

He was denied bail.

Police said Nigel De Peiza was charged with common assault, two counts of possession of ammunition, two counts of possession of a firearm, possession of firearm to endanger life, possession of ammunition to endanger life and assault by beating.

He was charged by PC Walcott of the police Gender Based Violence Unit (GBVU), North Eastern Division

De Peiza appeared before magistrate Cherril Ann Antoine via video conferencing on Tuesday, when he was remanded into custody. He is expected to return to court on May 26.

On April 23, Special Operations Response Team officers arrested a man at the San Juan office of WASA. He was taken to the San Juan police station and then to the Besson Street station where further inquiries were done.

The man was working for a contractor hired by WASA to carry out certain works. The GBVU was set up by Police Commissioner Gary Griffith earlier this year.
