A 58-year-old woman died on Tuesday afternoon on the Solomon Hochoy highway when a car driven by her son crashed into a utility pole. Police said the accident occurred about 1.05 pm on the southbound lane, just after the Golconda exit.

Karen Alexis of Coconut Drive, Fanny Village, Point Fortin, was in the front passenger seat while her son, Kadeem Alexis, 30, drove.

Police said Kadeem lost control of the Nissan Sylphy, which hit the utility pole and flipped. He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital and warded in stable condition. Up to news time he was said to be waiting for tests.

Karen was pinned under the dashboard and had to be removed by fire officers. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Original reports had said she was driving. Her husband Clive Alexis told Newsday that his son, a coast guardsman, had just finished his shift at the Chaguaramas base, and picked up his mother from work. She managed a post office in Chaguanas. They were on their way home when the accident happened. Clive Alexis said his son was in shock on hearing his mother was dead. Ste Madeleine police are continuing investigations.
