The names of 139 convicted inmates, as well as a number of prisoners on remand, have been sent to the courts and to the Minister of National Security for their cases to be reviewed.

If all goes well, they will be released from prison.

These prisoners will now have to wait until Thursday to find out their fates when the court reconvenes.

The names of the prisoners were expected to be submitted to the courts today, according to a release sent by the office of the Attorney General.

The prison commissioner is expected to send a list of convicted inmates to National Security Minister Stuart Young, and the commissioner of police is to send the judiciary a list of those on remand. The release said the Bail Review Court will be reconvened to deal with the list of remandees.

The Director of Public Prosecutions and the Chief Public Defender will facilitate the applications for variations of bail.

For the convicted inmates, Young will consider the list and make a determination.

In releases sent on April 5 and 11, the office of the Attorney General announced its intention to release low-risk prisoners in an effort to combat covid19.

An electronic hearing was held on the matter last Saturday, when the decision was made on the process for releasing prisoners.

The list of those eligible for release included people who had been sentenced to terms of imprisonment of a year or less, people who were eligible for bail but could not secure it and those who have been convicted, but are eligible for presidential pardons.
