A driver and passenger were injured in an accident in Cascade on Wednesday when a cement truck they were in lost control and broke through a brick wall before crashing into two houses.

Their injuries have been described as severe but non life-threatening. An ambulance was called, but the men were eventually taken to hospital in a police vehicle. A workman, who was in Dr Brian Bocage's yard, was also injured. Two teenaged girls, who are national swimmers, were home when the accident happened at around 10.45 am.

Bocage said he received a call from one of the girls about the accident.

"My first inquiry was the health and well-being of the people who were injured. There's a guy working here for me. I went to him immediately and noticed he has some injuries. He was talking, oriented and coherent but he was bleeding from a wound to his head.

"I didnt see the driver because he had already been moved. But I am extremely thankful that there has been no loss of life or limb. I am even more thankful because I'm usually in the front here on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday at around that time. I would've probably been a dead man."

When Newsday went to the scene, Bocage's property – littered with wire and bricks, was being inspected by insurance assessors and his attorney.

The truck appeared to have lost control upon reaching a bend on Ronald Avenue, crashing through the wall of Bocage's property, destroying a flight of stairs and a support column. It then broke through a fence and hit the neighbour's house. No one in the second house was injured.

Bocage said he was pleased that Coosal’s, the company which owns the truck, has been courteous and co-operative in dealing with the matter.

"I had actually gotten a call from the managing director, Mr Sieunarine Coosal himself, and his promises were great. I hope he lives up to the promises. But the response on their part has been excellent, so far."
