Guyana could easily be TT

THE EDITOR: Don't be fooled, the political tension which has and continues to grip Guyana for the past ten days, following general elections, can easily be our reality when we go to the polls later this year.

While none of us would like to see the tension and violence which has taken place in Guyana, happen here, we mus be cognizant of the fact that the possibility, however remote, does exist.

Our elections are becoming more and more intense and at times we can see emotions running high with things being said on various platforms that can easily stoke the fires of political passion. Guyana politics is very similar to our country in that there are two major parties which operate, by and large, along two ethnic groups which make up the support base of the respective parties.

Whenever election fever comes around, the race card is easily pulled and people temporarily forget themselves and the fact that after the election fever subsides, we all still have to live together in sweet TT.

This in my opinion is the sign of the times that we are living in, where race is more important than learning to love one another and treat each other right. Sad to say, we are getting worse every day and with general elections in the not too distant future, if this is not dealt with, there is no telling what type of explosion we can have.

As a concerned citizen, I call on all fellow Trinbagonians especially the politicians and leaders in civil society to not say things that can incite anger and hate. We must at all times, seek to unite our country knowing fully well that every creed and race, must find an equal place under the sun. We are all masters of our destinies and writers of our futures.

Let us learn from what is unfortunately taking place in Guyana and understand that with a general election around the corner we have to pay close attention to what is taking place in our Caricom neighbour. The old saying, 'When your neighbour's house is on fire, wet yours,' is very apt. Pay attention to what is happening in Guyana and if need be, TT, get your water ready.
