Police are investigating allegations of misappropriation of funds at the Division of Ageing in the Ministry of Social Development.

The funds were believed to have been given to a home for the elderly.

Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Camille Robinson-Regis, confirmed on Thursday that police were investigating the matter. She added, Fraud Squad officers approached the ministry for information regarding the allegations in January.

Sources told Newsday a senior officer in the division allegedly siphoned close to $800,000 out of the hands of TT citizens, collecting money under the pretence of being able to connect them with a home for the elderly.

However, sources told Newsday the home does not exist.

Asked about the home, Robinson-Regis said: “Given that the alleged fraud is in the hands of the police I am not at liberty to say more at this time.”
