Kidnapping suspect's death saddens Sharma

Former Cabinet Minister, Chandresh Sharma, expressed sadness Thursday over the death of one of the suspects in Tuesday's kidnapping episode in which his nephew, Dr Rudradeva Sharma, was killed.

"Any death that is not in the norm is of concern," Sharma said on being told of the passing of Akeem Marine, identified by police as a suspect in the incident and who was being treated at the San Fernando General Hospital along with two other suspects who were injured in the crash of the escape vehicle.

"We extend sympathy to the family, as they too are hurting like us,” Sharma said,

Meanwhile, Dr Prem Naidoo, the surviving doctor in the attempted kidnapping on Tuesday night is at home resting, while being interviewed by police.

Newsday visited his home in Palmiste on Thursday morning but was told by relatives that he has declined to speak with the media.

One relative said, “He needs some time to recover but is co-operating with the police investigation.”

Naidoo, 37 and his colleague Dr Sharma 38, were accosted by three men on Tuesday night at Scout House on Rushworth Street in San Fernando.

The men bundled the doctors into the trunk of white Honda CRV SUV at gunpoint and drove off.

The vehicle later crashed near Macaulay, killing Sharma on impact, while the other occupants were badly injured.

Naidoo was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

Newsday understands one of the men suspected in the kidnapping died at the San Fernando General Hospital on Thursday at 7 am, one is still warded and the third suspect has been discharged.

Police have identified the deceased suspect as Akeem Marine of Lady Hailes Avenue in San Fernando.

Sharma added that the funeral of his nephew has been scheduled for Sunday.
