MARCHIN Patriots maintained their hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2020 UWI-Unicom Twenty20 tournament with a comfortable 37-run win (via Duckworth-Lewis) over UWI Cricket Club in Group A action. After losing the opening match to Queen’s Park Cricket Club, at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground, at UWI SPEC, the Patriots bounced back and dominated a rain-affected affair, reduced to 12 overs. They hammered 133 for five in 12 and set 142 to win, UWI fell well short at 104 for four.

Patriots once more banked on Teshawn Castro for a fast start as the opener cracked 23 off 11 with four fours and a six. However, he fell to Sion Hackett while fellow opener Daniel Williams was caught and bowled to Wendell George for 12. Chris Pattia got to 16 off 17 with a pair of sixes before skipper Sachin Seecharan had him caught by Ryan Churaman. UWI lost the game, however, when Churaman took the ball and was blasted for 28 in an over by Jyd Goolie.

Goolie made 57 from 33 with six fours and three sixes, slogging Seecharan for a six and a couple fours too. However, Goolie would sky Stephawn Solomon into Emilio Gopaul’s waiting hands while Seecharan (two for 26) would get Vishan Jagassar caught by Aaron Alfred for 16. Kedell Glasgow (six not out) and the scoreless Adrian Ali saw the innings home.

In UWI’s turn at the crease, they never really got any momentum despite moving to 44 without loss after five. George was the first to go, stumped off Jagessar for 24 off 18.

Opener Aaron Alfred chipped in with 22 but he also was bowled by Jagessar, who ended with two for 22. Seecharan was also castled, this time by Karrel Bissoon for one. Ian Boyce offered some resistance with 33 off 16 but by that time, captain Ali’s men had the job in the bag. Bissoon would end with two for 15, leaving the Marchin side hoping Queen’s Park would crush UWI in last night’s final match to eliminate the hosts and send the Patriots to the knockouts.
