A magistrate granted a La Romaine man $85,000 bail on Monday for possession of a .38 revolver and six rounds of ammunition.

Denzil Jones, of Majory Street, appeared before senior magistrate Jo-Anne Connor in the San Fernando magistrates' court. The charge was read to him that on Friday at La Romaine, he had a chrome and metal gun. The charge was laid by PC Chadee of the San Fernando Police Station.

Police prosecutor Phillip Ramnath did not object to bail being granted, saying while Jones, 33, had a previous criminal charge, it was not related to the nature of the current charge.

Phillip said the police were prosecuting the case against Jones indictably and not summarily. All gun and ammunition charges are laid indictably, but the prosecution can pursue them before a magistrate, in which case the accused person is asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.

Connor granted Jones a cash alternative of $20,000 and ordered him to report every Saturday before 6 pm to the San Fernando Police Station.

He will reappear on January 6.
