Clint John appeared before a Chaguanas magistrate yesterday over the explosive device resembling a grenade found in a used car lot.

With his hands behind his back, John, 34, faced magistrate Rajendra Rambachan in the first court and was not called upon to plead. The magistrate read the charge that on October 25, at Buying Selling and Trading, at the corner of Almond Drive and Endeavour Road, Chaguanas, he unlawfully and maliciously threw an explosive device into the building with the intent to do grievous bodily harm to the people at the businessplace.

This was contrary to Section 24 of the Offences Against the Person Act, Chapter 11: 08. PC Mark Phillips of the Chaguanas CID laid the charge.

Prosecutor Sgt Alicia Soodeen objected to bail, saying John allegedly committed an offence while on bail. She told the court John was charged with robbery with violence, which stemmed from an incident in October 2018.

Looking at documents before him, the magistrate said John was not eligible for bail, given recent amendments to the Bail Act. He also said John has two addresses.

Attorney Shiva Boodoo represented John, who he said lives with relatives at Endeavour Road. The attorney said John’s children live with their mother at Sea Lots. The device was not brought to court. The magistrate remanded John into police custody and adjourned the case to November 28.
