Contradictions by PM at UN

THE EDITOR: I watched the Prime Minister’s presentation at the UN, where he attempted to make a strong case for non-involvement and non-intervention in other independent nations’ affairs as an unwavering policy of his Government.

He also noted that as PM he backed and supported strongly the role of the International Criminal Court (for which he credited our former prime minister and president ANR Robinson as a pioneer).

To me, his simultaneous positions appear to be at odds and in contradiction to one another.

The ICC by its nature is designed to hold individuals and leaders (mostly of independent nations) accountable for actions they take at home and against their own citizens, thus intervening in the internal affairs of other sovereign countries.

His policy of non-involvement/intervention is particularly interesting as it is declared at a meeting of nations, united by shared interests and commitment to ensuring that partner nations adhere to globally agreed standards for human rights, environmental protection, maintaining peace and security, and upholding international law.

Perhaps his audience will be more forgiving of his inherent contradictions.
