ALL female senators owe a debt of gratitude to Dr Linda Baboolal.

This was said by Government Senator Donna Cox as members of the Senate, on Wednesday, paid tribute to the former president of the Senate. Baboolal was a former parliamentarian and physician. She died on September 12.

Cox said Baboolal's class, grace, sharp wit and full rulings brought back in line "many a rambunctious speaker."

"At no time can anyone recall her compromising the high standards she set for herself and the Senate. She treated her constituents with the same measure of respect she showed in the Parliament. We stand on the shoulders of a giant woman. On behalf of a grateful nation, I offer condolences to her family."

Opposition Senator Khadijah Ameen credited Baboolal for inspiring her, as a form one student, to strive for more. Baboolal was a guest speaker at Ameen's secondary school, St George's College.

Senate President Christine Kangaloo said all in public life, especially women, must know of the sacrifices which must be made in order to serve.

She said Baboolal somehow found the means and the balance to excel in public life and life with her family.

"Her accomplishment as a woman has helped other women to aspire to positions in public life."

Baboolal also served as Minister of Social Services and Minister of Health, as president of the Senate and was the first female chairman of the People's National Movement.
