Diego Martin river overflows

COMMUTERS and motorists were left stranded in parts of Diego Martin after the river burst its banks yesterday following heavy thunder showers. There was flash flooding in parts of Port of Spain and the east/west corridor.

The Diego Martin Regional Corporation said the river burst its banks just after midday. Workers at a nearby WASA station and other several businesses were stranded.

Newsday was told the water lingered on the roadway for just over an hour before receding quickly and people were able to once again use the roadways. Other parts of the country also experienced heavy rains and reports indicated the Chaguanas and Couva were subjected to flash flooding along the main roads.

The Chaguanas regional corporation said, the usual areas along the main road, not too far from the police station flooded. There were also reports of flood in Enterprise and Felicity, where several houses had a minor intake of water.

The official of the disaster management unit there said, the water quickly subsided and there was no major damage reported.

The Meteorological office issued an adverse weather alert, at yellow level, which indicated a chance of heavy to intense showers and/or thunderstorm.

The alert was issued for the period 12 pm to 6 pm Wednesday. It stated that street, flash flooding and gusty winds are expected with an increased chance of landslides in areas that are prone.

Citizens are urged to take the necessary precautions as the country is still in both the rainy and hurricane seasons.
