Two women held for robbery

A 32-year-old Couva businesswoman could not stop thanking God for his mercy as her life and that of her daughter were spared when two women robbed her of cash and her car yesterday.

Around 12.45 am, the woman was at her business place in Couva when two women, one armed with a gun, came in and announced a robbery.

The businesswoman said the bandits relieved her of $6,000 cash and the keys to her grey Kia Sportage valued at $390,000.

Police were then called.

ASP Richard Smith told Newsday that after the robbery, the two women escaped with the car heading north on the Exchange Road.

Smith said Pc Motiram together with Ag Insp Alexander and officers of the Central Division Task Force, the Emergency Response Patrol Unit and the Couva charge room responded to the call of distress.

The two suspects were detained at Volmont Road, Bank Village, Freeport. Officers recovered one .38 special revolver with four rounds of .38 ammunition.

The businesswoman said, “It was one of the most terrifying times of my life. I am thankful we are alive today and I commend the police for doing a great job.

"My daughter was with me and she is only nine.”

She said while the car could be replaced she was grateful God was watching over them because the incident could have turned out worse. She claimed, however, that there was a third, male accomplice to the robbery.

“I can’t go back to my home because there is a male accomplice who got away and I will not feel safe until he is caught. I am appreciative of the swift approach from the police officers and I commend them for doing a remarkable job.”

Police said the two suspects, aged 27 and 28, were from Penal and Point Fortin respectively. Investigations are continuing.
