Anthem for silver medallist?

THE EDITOR: I thought it was a frivolous question but I asked it anyway. When does the silver medallist hear his/her national anthem played at a medal ceremony? Before reading on, think on it a little.

I asked several people and got some interesting answers, such as when the winner is disqualified. However, in that case, the original runner-up is no longer the silver but the gold medallist.

Another popular answer was when he/she plays it himself/herself, as consolation for what might have been.

No, the answer is much more obvious: when the silver medallist comes from the same country as the gold medallist.

Like when match sprint silver medallist Njisane Phillip heard his national anthem played but only because the winner was his TT countryman, Nicholas Paul.
