After a two-year hiatus, Mt Grace/ Harmony Hall is back in the Tobago Heritage Festival.
This evening, the community will host its heritage stage show production titled By the Hook or the Crook, We Celebrating Christmas, at the Mt Grace Recreational grounds at 7pm.
Previously, the production was hosted by the Mt Grace/ Harmony Hall Village Council, but it is being reintroduced by the area’s Prison Youth Club.
Speaking with Newsday last Saturday, 85-year-old Julia Cowan, co-ordinator of the club, said with the failure of the village council to continue the event, the youth club was filling the gap.
“I still am involved with the village council, but they are not putting on anything these days, so we really have nothing going on. The Prison Youth Club is involved in sports, prison youth week, youth trips – and looking at the fact that nothing was happening in the area, we at the youth club took the decision for the area to re-enter the annual festival,” she said.
The excitement of Christmas is enjoyed by many and even though it is just once a year, memories can last a lifetime. Many people look forward to presents, parang, family, friends and food. The Mt Grace/ Harmony Hall is hoping to recreate the festive Christmas atmosphere.
“From the time you enter the recreational ground area, you would see and feel Christmas. We’re doing cake, ginger beer, you name it. It’s all about Christmas. It would be Christmas in July. We’re calling on all to come out, give us their support for the sake of the children.”
Cowan said the production was possible through the benevolence of members.
“Everybody is saying we don’t have any money, no job, nothing. But it’s a group. So somebody will bring a hand of fig, plantains, somebody might bring rice, I might bring chicken, everybody bring something – so we would put it all together and celebrate Christmas. Whatever we get, we put it together and celebrate Christmas. Hence the tagline, by the hook or the crook, we celebrating Christmas with whatever we get."
Cowan said over ten people make up the cast and the production is just over three hours long.
