THE 19th edition of the Sagicor-St Andrew’s Golf Club Invitational will take place at the St Andrew’s Golf Course, Moka, Maraval today and tomorrow.
For the first time, Sagicor will have a Hole-in-One prize – an Audi A4. Sagicor will partner with Southern Sales and Service, who is the official ground transport sponsor. The Audi will be at the golf club this weekend and participants will get a chance to view the vehicle as they aim to hit Hole 7, which is usually a par-3 hole, in one stroke.
St Andrew’s Golf Club will group golfers into flights based on their handicap and age, to earn points that will qualify them for selection to
the national golf team.
Robert Trestrail, executive vice president and general manager of Sagicor Life Inc, said, “In addition to the points system that qualifies players for the national team, we continue to look for ways to excite our event.
“This year we aimed big! We headed straight to Southern Sales and literally hit a hole in one when they immediately agreed to partner with us on this. I am excited to welcome them on board as an official sponsor.”
Last year, the tournament had a brother-and-sister team, Wan Ju Lee and Ye Ji Lee, walk away with the top prizes. Wan Ju Lee had a record low core, claiming victory in the Championship Flight with scores 71 and 69, for a total of four-under-par.
Ye Ji Lee, the 2017 defending champion, reclaimed the 2018 title after shooting 76 and 75, which is four strokes better than her winning score in 2017. Ye Ji Lee has represented Trinidad and Tobago on both the junior and adult teams.
Sagicor will be hosting the Kids on the Greens. This interactive session will be held tomorrow, from 3 pm to 4 pm, and introduces both juniors and adults to the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, the most common rules of golf and the experience of being a member at St Andrew’s Golf Club.
The short programme is designed to provide participants with both a golf and social experience.
