Akesha Benjamin, programme officer of the TT Red Cross Society, encourages all to join in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the society today at the Brian Lara Promenade in Port of Spain.

"We are one of the rare organisations that encourages inclusivity; regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and nationality. If you have some time on your hands, come on down," she said, telling Newsday of the free testing for blood pressure, blood sugar and HIV at the event.

She believes the Red Cross should not only be known for disasters and wants the public to be aware of all its work. The event showcases various aspects, with booths featuring volunteerism, first aid, disaster preparedness and sexual education.

"We do work in schools, prisons and all different organisations. If you have an organisation and you want us to come in to do testing and/or lectures, we will come."

If you cannot make it to the event, Benjamin encourages organisations across TT to contact the Red Cross at 627-8215, as it is always looking for volunteers.
