A Ste Madeleine businessman shot dead a bandit who broke into his home this morning. Three accomplices escaped.

Police said that around 3 am on Wednesday, four men broke into the home of the 63-year-old owner of a supermarket at St Clement Junction. His home is on the same site.

Police said the owner has a licensed gun and shot one of the four men after he was awakened by the sound of them trashing his home. After he shot one bandit, the others fled.

Police traced a stolen iPhone to Beetham Gardens but only found the cellphone case. Members of the Inter-Agency Task Force and Guard and Emergency Branch searched for the stolen phone.

On Tuesday one of two bandits was killed during a robbery at Savi's Jewellery Store on the Southern Main Road in Couva. The second bandit was shot as well, but survived.
