Wounded prison officer out of hospital

PRISON officer Darren Mohan, who was chopped last week, has been discharged from hospital and is now resting at his Chaguanas home.

Mohan suffered injuries to his left side of his face.

He had emergency surgery at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and was released on Saturday afternoon.

According to a police report, the chopping incident occurred on Thursday in Chaguanas.

An internal investigation has been launched by the Prison Service Commission after a video circulating on social media showed details of the confrontation between the officer and another man.

Yesterday Ashmeed Ali appeared before Chaguanas magistrate Rajendra Rambachan charged with maliciously wounding the prison officer.

The charge was laid indictably and Ali was not called upon to plead. He was granted $60,000 bail and ordered to have no contact with the prison officer, directly or indirectly.

The matter was adjourned to August 5.
