No bail for Barkie again

CLIVE “Barkie” Atherly, the man accused of stabbing an off-duty policeman last month, reappeared in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was again informed of his right to apply to a judge in chambers on the issue of bail.

Atherly first appeared on April 17 before Magistrate Margaret Alert, who denied him bail and told him of his rights.

The accused construction worker is on five charges arising out of the same incident on April 13. Cpl Sookoo charged him with wounding PC Sterling “Flowers” Martin with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm, using obscene language, having a weapon, behaving in a disorderly manner and resisting arrest.

Yesterday, Atherly reappeared in the first court before justice of the peace Kevin King. King informed of his right to apply to a judge and remanded him into custody to reappear on June 12.

The victim, of the Guard and Emergency Branch, had emergency surgery on his neck at the San Fernando General Hospital after being stabbed with a broken glass bottle. He was at the hearing yesterday.

Police are contending that on April 13, Martin was talking to a former policeman and another man at the Busy Corner Bar on Coora Road, Siparia. He saw the accused cursing a woman and acting violently. He walked up to the man, identified himself as a policeman, and tried to quell the situation.

However, the man allegedly became enraged when the policeman held his arm to arrest him for using obscene language and behaving in a disorderly manner. The accused, police said, pulled away and continued cursing Martin while expressing his dislike of the police.

The man broke a glass bottle from the bar and stabbed Martin in the left side of his face and neck.
