ALMOST a decade after they were arrested and charged with misbehaviour for allegedly accepting a $900 bribe, two policemen were freed by a Port of Spain magistrate.

Senior magistrate Christine Charles discharged corporals David Joefield and Marvin St Rose after the prosecution failed in its application to have hearsay evidence admitted at the trial as she upheld a no-case submission advanced by the men’s attorneys Shirvani Ramkissoon and Larry Williams.

Both men were charged in 2010 for allegedly accepting a bribe on June 21, that year, at Seventh Avenue, Barataria, on behalf of Atiba Castillo.

Castillo had been held by the officers earlier in connection with a robbery.

It was alleged that the two policemen were arrested in a sting operation which caught them receiving marked bills from a relative of Castillo to forego the accused man’s prosecution.
