CENTRAL Worriers (men) and La Cura (women) captured the senior titles at the second hosting of the TT Volleyball Federation`s “Let’s Play Volleyball” community outreach programme, held on Saturday, at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
The tournament was supported by San Fernando City Council and Mayor Junia Regrello and was structured following the park volley model on a smaller court (8 x 16 metres) allowing four players per team.
In the men’s senior playoff between the two registered teams in the category, Worriers won 2-1 (20:21, 21:20, 15:12) in a close battle against La Cura men team. However, in the women equivalent, La Cura overcame Big SEPOS 2-0 (21:13, 21:15) to lift the trophy.
Pleasantville Senior Secondary School did the double in the boys and girls junior categories. In the boys, Pleasantville Senior defeated Chaguanas North Secondary 2-0 (21:7, 21:14) while J-MVP Coaching School captured the bronze medal.
In the female category, Pleasantville Senior defeated Troopers Volleyball Club in a golden set (25:17) and in third spot was Chaguanas North Secondary. J-MVP coaching school and Chaguanas North Secondary B placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Addressing the spectators and participants was the councillor for Mon Repos/ Navet, Mrs. Particia Victor-Wilson who also holds the position as Chairman of the Sport Committee in the council. She identified the benefits of such an event to the development of all the positive values associated with team sport. She also highlighted that accepting these opportunities will develop their skills as players in this internationally acclaimed sport and together with dedication and commitment will ensure that they become great athletes to represent their communities and our Nation.
Apart from the physical activities there was also a health fair, giving persons the opportunity to interact with athletic trainer Brenton Bain, sport nutritionist Gina Ragbir both of UTT and medical doctors from San Fernando.
Stopping by to lend support to the event were national female volleyballers Channon Thompson and Krystle Esdelle who signed autographs and mingled with the Crowd.
