AT long last – after nine years – Zeia Flemming has got the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) apartment she had been longing for.

The 56-year-old Felmming was all smiles, contented that she had put up a good fight with a landlord on the one hand, and the HDC on the other.

In January, Flemming got a telephone call from an official who told her that apartment 13 in Building Six, Olera Heights, Circular Road, had been selected for her.

“I dropped on my knees and I gave thanks. My days knocking from pillar to post over,” Flemming told the Newsday.

In January, her landlord had partially broken down Flemming’s one-room shack in an effort to get her off his land in Pleasantville.

Flemming began staying with her eight-year-old son by a friend, June Foster.

Acase against the landlord comes up on Thursday in the San Fernando magistrates’ court.

But Flemming told Newsday that whilst she is minded to press on with the case, she has been waiting since January for the keys to the Olera Heights apartment.

But no one at HDC seems to know when they will present them to her.

“I want to put that episode with my landlord behind my back,” Flemming said.

She showed HDC receipts for $2,100 for security deposit, rent of $700 and $90 to the Water And Sewerage Authority which the HDC asked her to pay in January. But despite these monthly payments, Flemming said, the door to her apartment remains locked and she is unable to move in with her son.

After nine years of knocking on the doors of HDC for an apartment, Flemming said she has begun to call daily for the keys.

“I hope is not for long again. They keep telling me they will call me to come for the keys. That is since January. I pay rent already, but I not living in the apartment and we in May,” Flemming said.
