Archbishop Gordon laments surge of violence

AS A NATION we have lost the value of our society, and as a people we have become so bitter with each other. We see a surge of violence among the people in this country.

These were the words of RC Archbishop Jason Gordon during mass at the La Divina Pastora Church in Siparia yesterday. Reflecting on Mother’s Day, he urged the congregation to look towards Jesus’ mother Mary as the mother of all mankind.

“Like a good shepherdess, she has taken care of her flock calling on her children to turn to the path of Jesus because it is the path of peace.”

Gordon said people of all races and religions should look towards finding peace.

“The people who come here seeking the blessings from La Divina Pastora should not then go home and treat their neighbours with disrespect.”

From as early as 5 am, people from all over TT were gathering at the church for the annual Feast of La Divina Pastora.

In his sermon, Gordon referred to the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the mother was advising the daughter to respect the man as the head of the house. The mother figure in the movie then advised that the woman is the neck that turns that head. He said Catholics believe Mary is the neck while Jesus is the head. “When you can’t reach Jesus, you turn to his mother and as the neck she will turn his head towards you and you will receive his glory.”

He warned the congregation not to go here, there or everywhere to find God.

“When something goes wrong you want to run to Tom, Dick and Harry for blessings. But if you follow others, they may lead you astray.”

After the sermon, the La Divina Pastora statue was placed on a van and taken through the streets of Siparia accompanied by singing from those in attendance.
