A 53-year-old relative of mother of two, Bassie Sooknanan, has been charged with her murder.

On Friday, police received instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge the man who is accused of chopping Sooknanan to death her Persad Avenue, Cunupia home on April 26.

Legal officer PC Kyrn Lewis, of the Homicide Bureau Region III, sent a file on the case to the DPP's office who directed that the relative be charged, and he is due to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate tomorrow.

The relative had been treated at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope for poisoning and was since discharged into police custody.

Sooknanan was also a grandmother of one.

Another relative yesterday said the family was still struggling to cope with Sooknanan's murder. “It is really hard to get over something like this. To her sons, she was their world. Now they have to live without their mother. They are really hurting."
