Children of murdered Venezuelan can't afford final goodbye

THE children of murdered Venezuelan Katherine Diaz received a double whammy as they would be observing Mother’s Day on Sunday for the first time without her and they would be unable to attend her funeral.

Arrangements are being made for the 26-year-old mother of three to be buried in a cemetery at Princes Town early next week. The children are staying with her relatives in Tucupita, capital of the Venezuelan state of Delta Amacuro. Due to the economic and social problems in Venezuela, they do not have money to travel to Trinidad to say goodbye to her.

"They have nothing. The family has no money to come across and we heard it is very expensive to buy a coffin. Katherine will get a proper burial under Christian rites. The children do not have passports and it could take months to get one. To get one fast, they would have to pay lots of money, and they don’t have," said a friend of Diaz’ sister.

The sister is one of several witnesses who found Diaz gasping for breath after being repeatedly stabbed on a couch in the living room of a house at King Street in Princes Town last Sunday.

On Tuesday PCs Mitchell, Basdeo and Johnson, arrested the suspect, who was hiding in some bushes not far from where the stabbing occured. Police said the man’s clothes were smeared with blood.

The suspect, also a Venezuelan, is said to be the father of one of Diaz's children. He remains in custody, up to today assisting with the investigation. Police from Princes Town and PC Ali of the Homicide Bureau are investigating.
