6 months jail for stealing mountain bike

A MAN who stole a US$400 Mountain Bike and sold it for TT$100, was jailed yesterday in the San Fernando magistrates’ court for six months.

Derrick Sair alias "Silence," 56, of Victoria Village, San Fernando, before senior magistrate Jo-Anne Connor, pleaded guilty to larceny from a woman on Suekeran Street, San Fernando. Sair admitted that he was a cocaine addict.

At about 3 pm last Friday, Crystal Pedro parked the bicycle in her backyard and left home, police prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said. She returned some time later but did not see it.

Seedan said that Pedro viewed CCTV footage installed in her home then reported the matter to the San Fernando CID. PC James Keifer arrested and charged Sair.

The prosecutor said that when confronted, Sair confessed, “I take the bike and sell it. I have a drug problem.”

Connor asked Sair why he did not enrol at the Piparo Drug Treatment Centre, but he said that officials there told him they could not take in any more inmates. Connor told Sair that his criminal record showed a string of convictions.

“Every two minutes you here,” Connor said.

She ordered him to serve the jail term with hard labour.
