TTBS hits Vasant for 'irresponsible' bribe allegation

The TT Bureau of Standards (TTBS) has admonished former trade minister Vasant Bharath for his allegation that the TTBS inspectorate responsible for inspecting tyres accepts bribes from an unnamed importer.

The TTBS, in a release, said the statement was made by Bharath on Synergy TV’s Breaking Dawn morning show on April 30.

"TTBS wishes to state that there is no formal report nor evidence to substantiate Mr Bharath’s utterance," it said. "When subsequently contacted, Mr Bharath was unwilling to provide the details that would allow TTBS to investigate this allegation."

TTBS said its Trade Ministry-appointed inspectors are required to perform their functions fairly, even-handedly and fearlessly.

"This level of responsibility and authority is balanced with accountability within the governance structure of TTBS and it is required to vigorously investigate any allegations of partiality or favouritism in order to insulate inspectors from unsubstantiated allegations that will inflict irrevocable damage to TTBS’ reputation for impartiality. In the event that an allegation of misconduct of this nature is proven, the relevant due process will be applied to the specific matter.

"TTBS deems Mr Bharath’s statement as irresponsible and potentially damaging to its role as a national regulator and appeals to his good self and the wider public to desist from such unproductive narrative and instead contribute meaningfully to national development through constructive dialogue and active participation in the various fora."

Bharath, in a telephone interview, said his statement was simply based on a report given to him by a tyre importer. He said officials contacted him and asked him to divulge the name of his informant, but he told them he was not willing to do that.

"(If I do that) the person is likely to be subject to further levels of discrimination."

He added: "(The TTBS) must know I have no ulterior motive or gain. But they should dig deep and understand the real possibility that these things are happening. They must have heard whispers."
