VENEZUELAN Katherine Diaz, a 26-year-old mother of three, had only been in TT for a week before she was brutally stabbed to death by a male relative.

The only remaining relative in Trinidad, a sister, yesterday appealed for help to raise funds to give Diaz a proper funeral. The sister, who is 18, spoke with Newsday at the Forensic Science Centre in St James where she went to formally identify the body.

The sister said she and Diaz arrived in Trinidad with nothing but hoping to make a better life here. Diaz’s three children, one of whom is for the suspect, all lived with relatives in Tucupita, Venezuela. The sister said she is unemployed and because of her status as a non-nationals, she is unable to access government assistance. Newsday was also told Diaz’s body could not be repatriated to her home town of Tucupita because it is too expensive and too dangerous. Venezuela is in the throes of major social and political unrest. The sister said she is in fear for her own life as the killer is still at large. At about 4 am on Sunday, Diaz’s screams were heard in an apartment in a house off King Street in Princes Town. Other occupants saw a man stabbed Diaz who lay on a couch. The killer then unlocked the front door and walked out of the house, escaping in the dark.Anyone willing to help Diaz’s sister give her sibling a proper burial can contact her at 716-6812 or 382-4876.
