MATT: All responsible for press freedom

In commemorating World Press Freedom Day today, the Media Association of TT (MATT) is urging the media and the public to do their part in supporting and encouraging accurate reporting and fact-checking, in a release issued yesterday.

The release noted that recent rankings from international media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) placed TT at 39 out of 180 countries for the World Press Freedom Index.

They said, according to the poll, the Americas showed the largest deterioration and attributed TT’s relatively low ranking to several pieces of legislation such as the Whistleblower Protection Bill Data Protection Act and Libel and Defamation Act, among others.
