Man arrested after pretending to be an attorney

A Tunapuna man who pretended to be an attorney to represent his brother-in-law in a possession of marijuana case has been arrested.

According to reports, the man in his 30’s stood up in the Tunapuna Magistrates’ court before magistrate Sherene Murray-Bailey. The man was about to address the court regarding his relative when he was stopped.

Court officials said the prosecutor noticed that the man had never appeared in court before and that he may be lying when he said he was an attorney.

Vandenburg-Bailey asked the man if he was an attorney and if his name was on the roll of attorneys. He said yes. The magistrate said she was going to check and the man attempted to flee the courtroom but was stopped by police. After checking she returned to the courtroom and informed the man that his name was not on the roll of attorneys and the Law Association confirmed he was not an attorney according to their records.

The man was then told to sit in the public gallery. From there he was taken to the Tunapuna Police Station.

His relative was fined for the marijuana possession charge.
