COP: MPs must account for vast wealth

One day after the arrest of former attorney general Anand Ramlogan and Opposition senator Gerald Ramdeen, the Congress of the People said in a statement (which mentioned no one in particular) that MPs must account for their vast wealth.

“The Congress of the People wishes to place on record our support for the police in its fight against corruption.”

While saying all are innocent until proven guilty, the COP said those who steal from the public purse must be held accountable, just like those caught in other criminal acts, as it deprives citizens of much needed services such as hospital beds, water distribution and upgrades to schools and roads.

“We hope this is not the end but the beginning of this thrust.

“The COP continues to call for all those in public office to account for the vast wealth that some have attained on parliamentary salary. Furthermore, we want to put on record, whether it be the COP, PNM, UNC or any other entity that should sufficient evidence be found, all must be held accountable.”

The COP said it is time to put our country's interest over and above political party or individual interests for a better TT.

“Let us continue to rein in rogue elements who are bent on robbing our people of our hard-earned wealth.”
