Aunt waits for lift not knowing nephew shot dead

THE aunt of a 30-year-old El Socorro taxi driver was left waiting at church for him to pick her up unaware that he was shot dead at the time on Wednesday night.

Police said Rajendra Bharath was outside the home of relatives along Don Miguel Road at 8 pm when he was shot 21 times by a gunman who later ran off.

Relatives later found Bharath bleeding on the ground and took him to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope where he died not too long after.

At the Forensic Science Centre in St James, Bharath's mother Natasha Bharath said she did not know why anyone would want her son killed. She said he lived in the area and came to her house for dinner that evening.

"Everything was normal. He ate, drank some soft drink and then he was ready to go out and pick up his aunt who he calls 'granny' from church.

"He went outside to get in his car which was parked a little way down the street when we heard the gunshots. I saw about 12 bullet holes in the car but at the hospital they told us he was shot 21 times." No one has been arrested.
