Clayton Blackman, president of the National Association of Administrative Professionals (NAAPTT), has said administrative professionals are more than secretaries who simply “type and file.”

In acknowledgement of Administration Professional Week, which runs from April 28-May 3, Blackman said the 21st century had brought a new perspective for the profession.

He said executives could attest that in today’s complex work environment, administrative professionals were the heartbeat of any organisation.

“Their role, no doubt, has evolved from the formative tasks of clerical duties to the position that supports the leaders in the organisation in a much more meaningful way.

“Your relentless dedication and commitment to the office in which you support is immeasurable, as you have proven that you understand the unique level of support needed to ensure executives remain effective.”

Blackman said this year marked 50 years of the association and as it continued along a path towards a brighter tomorrow and this year's activities will be dedicated to the organisation's “Golden Girls.

“Our intrepid patriots, our dedicated and committed forerunners who would have laid a solid foundation for us to stand on today.

“As we celebrate one full week of activities, we would remember those who would have contributed and moved on and also those who are still with us making invaluable contributions to the further development of administrative professionals.”

Blackman said administrative professionals recognised the challenges the 21st century brought for the business environment and could appreciate that, in order for organisations to be effective, administrative professionals must continue to provide the exceptionally high standard of dedication and commitment to the organisations they served.

“With this in mind, we encourage each one of you to continue giving your best and display your ethical and leadership traits that we know each one of you possess.

“The organisation that you belong to depends a lot on you to attain its goals and objectives.”
