LEGISLATION is coming to deal with illegal guns, says National Security Minister Stuart Young.

He was responding to an urgent question in the Senate yesterday from Opposition Senator Wade Mark on what urgent counter-measures are being taken, given recent reports that at least ten people were shot and six confirmed dead from Sunday to Monday, and this upsurge in violent crime.

Young replied that the incidents were carried out with firearms and the Government is committed to bringing shortly "particular legislation to deal with the scourge of illegal firearms in TT."

He said the legislation will require a special majority.

Mark asked what interim measures were being taken by his ministry and Government to deal with upsurge in criminal activities.

Young reported that after returning to TT late Saturday night he held an emergency meeting with the police, Defence Force and intelligence services on Sunday afternoon. He said on Monday he met with all the heads of divisions in National Security and the intelligence services on the launch of a number of intelligence-driven operations "to deal with what we are seeing now."

He added: "I will not get into the specifics into what is intended."
