Farewell to murdered Cunupia woman tomorrow

RELATIVES, friends, and villagers are expected to bid farewell tomorrow to Bassie Sooknanan, 53, who was chopped to death at her Cunupia home on Friday night by a close male relative.

Sooknanan's funeral will take place at her home.

The man, who drank poison after allegedly killing her, remains in hospital in a serious condition. Police are expected to take a statement from him once his condition improves.

Sooknanan was the mother of two and grandmother of one.

One relative said, “It is really hard to say goodbye to her. She was such a sweet and kind woman. She did not deserve this.”

She said Sooknanan had suffered in silence for years.

“She was abused for years and yet she stayed. This may be the only time she would find peace."

An autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre on Monday showed Sooknanan died from injuries to her neck, face, and chest.

Earlier that day, the suspect had accused Sooknanan of being with a man who he said was inside the house.

Police said that at about 11 pm neighbours heard Sooknanan and the man arguing inside their house, then heard Sooknanan screaming. They contacted the police and went to the house, but by the time police arrived, Sooknanan was lying dead in the yard.

The 53-year-old man was next to her body, frothing at the mouth. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mt Hope.

Homicide Region Three police are investigating.
