My son was no gangster

Deanne Jacob, mother of murdered Anson “Bulls” Jacob Lewis, wants TT to know that her son was not a member of any gang.

Jacob who lives in the US has asked Newsday for a retraction saying that police information provided to the newspaper was not credible.

Her son was one of five murdered on Saturday night. The Sunday Newsday report said Jacob from Espinet Street, Laventille, was killed when on his way home with his girlfriend, gunmen began shooting at his car. The car then crashed and overturned.

It was further reported that Jacob died on the scene while his girlfriend was unhurt. Police said, in the report, Jacob’s killing was linked to the Rasta City and Muslim war and was also “directly linked to the murder of Darren “Cowman” King.”

The report said King was shot last year and his killers were then killed by police in a shootout afterwards. It added that police said both King and Jacob were members of the Rasta City gang.

Jacob’s mother in the phone interview with Newsday yesterday said, “The police information is not credible stating that my son was a member of the Rasta City/Muslim gang.

“He was not a member of any gang. If they want to label his death alongside Darren King’s death, I have no issues with that. But my son was not a member of any gang.

“No Rasta City, no Muslim gang.”

Jacob then said she wanted Newsday to correct its Sunday article.

Asked why she had no objections to her son’s death being linked to King’s death, Jacob said she could not say that their deaths were linked. She said, however, King was his friend and she “could not say that because Darren was his friend, his murder was linked to that.”

When asked if Darren and her son were friends, Jacob said, “They were friends and please do not try to twist my words. I am saying, right, they all grew up in the same neighbourhood and they were friends.”

She added that they all grew up as friends in Success Laventille, between Toussaint Trace and Pashley Street. “Darren was like my son,” Jacob added.

“Not because you grow up in an area and somebody get killed the death should be linked. If because they are friends, they killed him, well then, suffer it to be so.”

“But my son was no member of no (sic) gang and I need that to be corrected. If you want to say my son was in a ladies gang where it is only ladies, good, I would abide with that but do not connect it to no gang.

“And the police information is not credible. It is not, and Newsday as a big newspaper should know that. They should know that the police information is not credible,” she added.

Jacob said her son was very loving, never disrespectful. She said her son’s funeral will be private.

Newsday regrets the pain caused to Ms Jacob by our report.
