Five killings overnight

FIVE people have been killed overnight, including a grandmother and a teenager, who police believe was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Among the five are 16-year-old Kurland Gunn of Dundonald Hill, Long Circular; 41-year-old Anson “Bulls” Jacob of Espinet Street, Laventille; and Kerron Primus, of First Private Road, Mt D’Or. The murder toll now is 167 compared to 174 for the same period last year.

In the most recent of the murders, Primus, 32, alias Yankee, was killed around 10.55pm on Friday.

Police said they received a report of gunshots along First Private Road, near the David Nakhid Recreation Ground. When they arrived they found Primus’ body. He had been shot and chopped.

He was not immediately identified. and police could not give a motive for his killing.

Less than half an hour later, Jacob was killed on his way home with his girlfriend when gunmen began shooting at his car, which crashed and overturned. Jacob died on the scene while his girlfriend escaped unhurt.

Police said Jacob’s killing is linked to the Rasta City and Muslim war and directly linked to the murder of Darren “Cowman” King. King was shot dead last year, and his killers in turn were killed by police in a shootout sometime afterwards.

Teenage murder victim Gunn, a devout Muslim, had just finished additional prayers following his obligatory Juma (Friday prayers) at Bay Street, St James, when he was killed. Police said the intended target, who was shot in the neck, remained unidentified up to yesterday evening.

According to police, Gunn was liming with friends around 9.25pm when a man described as “a Spanish” approached and opened fire, hitting Gunn and the other man, while others ran for safety. Gunn died on the scene. The other man was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he remains warded in a serious condition.

Of the other two people killed, one has been identified as Bassie Sooknanan, 53, of Persad Avenue, Cunupia, who was chopped to death by a male relative. The man drank poison in an attempt to end his own life but is now warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Police said from what doctors told them, he will survive.

The other victim is Keron “Chip” Jack, 27, found murdered in a track at Crown Trace, Enterprise, Chaguanas, around 12.30 am on Saturday morning.
