Cunupia grandmother chopped to death

A Cunupia grandmother was chopped to death at her home by a close male relative on Friday night.

Dead is Bassie Sooknanan, 53, of Persad Avenue, Cunupia. The suspect, police said swallowed a poisonous substance after the attack.

According to a police report at about 11 pm neighbours reported to police hearing Sooknanan and the man arguing inside their house. They then heard Sooknanan screaming.

Neighbours immediately contacted the police.

However, when police arrived at the house they found Sooknanan's body on the bedroom floor in a pool of blood.

A cutlass covered in blood was also found. The 53-year-old man was also found next to her body frothing from his mouth.

He was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he remains warded in a critical condition.

Neighbours said the couple was often heard arguing loudly but they could not believe what happened.

“This is really horrible what happened to her. She was such a nice woman, very pleasant and always smiling. But it appeared they were going through some problems.”

Homicide Region Three police are investigating.
