Man who tried to rob cop jailed for 18 mths

THE man shot in the groin by an off-duty police officer whom he tried to rob has been jailed for 18 months.

The incident happened on March 15 at New Haven Avenue, Marabella,

Nigel George, 38, of St John's Street, Marabella, pleaded guilty before magistrate Indar Jagroo in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court to assaulting the policeman with intent to rob him.

During the assault, which happened at about 7.30 pm, another man, Ackimo Cobham, was shot and killed.

Police prosecutor Sgt Krishna Beedasie told Jagroo that the sergeant was sitting in his car when he saw George and Cobham running towards it. They were holding guns and the prosecutor said they pointed them at the policeman and shouted, “Get out of your f---king car, we want yuh f---king car and money.”

Beedasie said when they were about six feet away from the car, the sergeant drew his service revolver and fired at them and George clutched his groin.

He later went to San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.

Acting ASP Andrew John investigated and charged him.

Attorney Ainsley Lucky pleaded for leniency for George, telling Jagroo George had been drinking and smoking with friends who led him astray.

Jagroo told George he was affording him a one-third discount for his guilty plea.

He was ordered to serve the jail term with hard labour.
