Laventille double murder victims named

TWO people who were shot dead in Morgan Lane off Pashley Street, Laventille, on Monday have been identified as 32-year-old Erin Ali and Devon James, 43, of Belmont and Diego Martin respectively.

Newsday spoke yesterday morning to relatives at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, who said they are not sure what the two friends were doing in Laventille.

James’ relatives said he worked as a private hire taxi driver on the weekends and believe he took a private job from Ali, who was visiting someone in the area.

Police originally believed their deaths were a case of mistaken identity, but now believe Ali may have intended to sell a gold chain to someone in the area, who shot and killed both her and James when they went to do the transaction. James’ mother Justianne James told Newsday she did not think her son would want to be involved in anything illegal and believes he might have been killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“We only found out about his murder last night (Tuesday night), when the police called us,” said one. “The last time I saw him was on Sunday afternoon. We didn’t hear from him and thought it was strange but didn’t know what to do.”
