A Bethel man was shot after an altercation with Shirvan Road police last night. Newsday was told police were responding to a domestic dispute call when Nixon Cooke, 36, of Riseland Trace, approached officers in the yard armed with a knife.

Newsday was also told Cooke was cautioned but continued to charge at the police with the knife, threatening to attack them if they did not leave his property. He was cautioned a second time but did not comply and was shot once by a WPC in the chest. He was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
