Whose body is this?

THE body of an unidentified man was found floating in the Gulf of Paria near the Brighton Port in La Brea yesterday morning. Initially, it was believed to be one of two men who went missing last week Sunday during a fishing expedition near Carli Bay where two other men drowned.

But when Newsday spoke to grieving relatives who went to identify the body, they said it was neither that of Chunilal "Surin" Gyandass, 51, or Videsh Malo, 23, both of Beaucarro Road in Freeport. "That is not Surin. This person has tattoos on both arms. It is neither of them," said a member of the Gyandass family.

At about 9 am yesterday, workers at the port located at the La Brea Industrial Development Company spotted the body floating and contacted the Coast Guard unit. The man was face-down and wearing a brown t-shirt and three-quarter pants. He has shoulder-length hair and of Indian descent.

About two hours after the discovery, the body was bought to shore and handed over to the La Brea police. Police are calling on the public for help in identifying the body. Anyone with information can contact the nearest police station or La Brea police at 648-7444.

Last week Sunday, Gyandass, Malo and four other men, including his brother Chunilal who cremated yesterday, went fishing at sea. The flat-bottom boat capsized and sank leaving the six men stranded. Two swam to safety and relatives went in a search for the others. The next day the bodies of Chunilal, a truck driver, and Ronald Ramnarine, 39, were fished out of the sea.

The search continues for the two missing men. In an unrelated incident, South Western Division police are investigating the discovery of human bones found in a forested area at Parry Lands Village in Guapo yesterday morning. Someone contacted police who visited the scene. Police from Guapo police station and Homicide Bureau Region III are investigating.
