The Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) today denied claims that ex-Petrotrin workers are being forced to march on May Day.

Speaking with Newsday yesterday one worker who did not want to be named said after applying for a position at the Patriotic Energy and Technology Ltd, he received e-mails and WhatsApp messages from the union stating that he must attend May Day.

“If we are not present, we will not be considered for jobs if the OWTU gets the refinery. I have the e-mails that were sent to me by the general secretary as well as WhatsApp messages which are being sent by union officials to intimidate job applicants.

“It appears as if they are holding this over us. We have to show support or else we will not be considered for employment regardless of people’s qualification.”
