Members of the Central Division Operational Unit are being hailed as heroes after they rescued a 30-year-old woman from being killed by her common-law husband in Enterprise Street, Chaguanas this afternoon.

Police said they were on patrol at around 3.15 pm when they received a report of domestic violence at a house nearby.

They went to the home and knocked but no one answered. From outside they could hear the woman screaming for help.

The officers went around the house and looked through a glass door where they saw her husband, Christopher Signuineau, chopping her with a Chinese chopper.

Police called on him to stop and when he allegedly refused, they broke through the glass and shot him once.

Police took both Signuineu and his wife to the Chaguanas health facility where he died.

His wife is still being treated for her wounds.

Snr Supt Seepersad and Insp Gokool went to the scene.

ASP Richard Smith of the Central Division is continuing investigations.
