ALYSHA Gomez and Shunelle Sawh were the stars for TT on day one of the Cricket West Indies TT Women’s Cricket Association Girls 19 and Under T20 Tournament, yesterday.

In match one at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva, spin bowler Gomez led TT to an easy eight-wicket win over Barbados. Gomez ended with a brilliant spell of 4/12 in four overs and Shalini Samaroo grabbed 2/23 in four overs to restrict Barbados to a modest 87/7 in 20 overs. Shaunte Carrington was the top scorer for the Bajans with 26 and Aaliyah Alleyne contributed 13.

In reply, TT were reduced to 6/2 as openers Shania Abdool (four) and Anjani Goordeen (two) fell cheaply. However, Sawh and captain Reanna Farrow shared in an unbroken 84-run partnership to guide TT to 90/2 in 13.5 overs. Sawh ended on 32 not out off 36 deliveries with four fours and Farrow struck 25 not out.

In TT’s second match, also played at NCC, the home team recorded another eight-wicket win this time over Guyana. Shabika Gajnabi struck 52, but her innings could only lead Guyana to 108/6 in 20 overs as Gomez returned to take 2/20. Afruica Gentle chipped in with 16 for Guyana.

Abdool showed top form on this occasion cracking 35 off 30 balls with five fours to help TT comfortably to 110/2 in 14.2 overs. Sawh and Farrow continued to contribute with the bat scoring 26 not out and 18 not out respectively. The tournament also features Jamaica, Canada and Windward Islands. In other results yesterday, Canada defeated Jamaica by seven wickets, Guyana got past Canada by six runs and Windward Islands eased past Jamaica by 37 runs. The result of the Barbados-Windward Islands match was not available up to press time.

The tournament will continue from 9.30 am today and will run until Sunday.
