THE Prime Minister promised to make “a hell of a lot of enemies” as he vowed to fight rampant corruption by measures such as pending whistle-blower legislation, he told a People’s National Movement (PNM) meeting at Barataria South Secondary School on Tuesday.

Saying $1.5 billion was borrowed to build the Couva Hospital, Rowley complained $500 million of this was spent on “services and consultancies” under the former government.

He vowed to build hospitals at Sangre Grande for less than the $1 billion Point Fortin Hospital, without bribery. “There’s nobody in this Government that is asking for a percentage of what the hospital costs. So contractors don’t have to factor into their tender what they’ve got to pay to get the job.”

Rowley said in the past the taxpayer had paid for corruption by others. “So when you see them showing off with their palace, their Rolls Royce and however they spend their money and dig holes in the ground and put it in barrels, it’s you paying for that.” He said the Government has brought sobriety and honesty to the conduct of public business and declared war on corruption. “That reflects itself in a reduced price for the service.”
