Cop stabbed with glass bottle

A policeman is being treated at the San Fernando General Hospital after he was stabbed with a broken glass bottle by a patron at a bar on Saturday night.

Sources said PC Sterling Martin of the Guard and Emergency Branch underwent emergency surgery yesterday. He is in a serious but stable condition after being stabbed to the face.
Police said, on Saturday Martin – who was off duty– was liming at a bar at Coora Road, Siparia when a man entered the bar cursing and harassing patrons.

Martin identified himself and warned the man about his behaviour, but the man ignored him. Police said Martin approached the man for a second time, but the man picked up a glass bottle from the ground and attacked Martin who fell to the ground.

Patrons intervened and police from the Siparia station were called. They arrested the man. Martin was taken to the Siparia health facility and later to the hospital.

Senior police said the man would be charged with assault, malicious wounding, disorderly behaviour, using obscene language and resisting arrest.
